Title: Cape Lookout National Seashore ORV Management Plan
Post by: Keith Holman on May 26, 2014, 10:50:07 pm
Forgive the cross-post:

"The National Park Service (NPS) is developing an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) management plan / environmental impact statement and regulation for Cape Lookout National Seashore (CALO).

The NPS recognizes that ORV's, if allowed, must be regulated in a manner that is not only consistent with applicable law, but also appropriately addresses resource protection (including protected, threatened and endangered species), public safety and potential conflicts among the various CALO users."

Based on my brief perusal of the draft, it appears that even the no-action alternative looks to phase out ATV/UTV use over 5 years; institute an education requirement -- I'm imagining something like the "high quality" video at Cape Hatteras -- for each driver; and a paid permit system available for 10 days or a full year.  I will be reading the draft more thoroughly but encourage you to review it as well and comment. One alternative includes no motor vehicles other than those operated by concessionaires.

The Draft is available online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/documentsList.cfm?parkID=359&projectID=15978 The comment period runs 05/23/2014 - 07/21/2014
