OHV Comments Sought

The Plumas National Forest is actively developing its Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant application that will be submitted to the State of California by September 17, 2007. The public is invited to comment on any changes or improvements to the program and to assist with the development of the grant application. The draft application will be available for public review from August 8 through September 4, 2007. To request a copy, contact any Plumas National Forest Ranger District Office, or visit the website, http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas

A Grant Application will be prepared for Equipment, Facilities Operation and Maintenance (F&OM), Law Enforcement, Trail Maintenance, and Conservation Projects for the Plumas NF summer and winter OHV programs. The 2007-2008 grant will provide for operation, maintenance, signing, map printing, resource protection and law enforcement for trails and facilities associated with the Plumas National Forest recreation program.

The summer OHV program consists of: 5,282 miles of roads available for summer OHV touring, including 109 miles of “true” 4X4 roads and single-track; developed OHV camps at Gold Lake, Poker Flat, Stag Point, American House & Cleghorn Bar; monitoring for OHV impacts to soils and wildlife habitat; and an active volunteer program through Adopt-A-Trail.

The winter snowmobile program consists of: three winter recreation areas (Bucks Lake, La Porte, and Lakes Basin) consisting of 184 miles of groomed snowmobile trails with an active volunteer grooming program; 195 miles of signed, numerous miles and acres of ungroomed snowmobile riding opportunities; winter staging areas at Gold Lake, Bucks Summit, Big Creek and La Porte; warming huts at the La Porte staging area, Four-Trees, four trailside warming huts associated with the La Porte trail system; and monitoring for winter use impacts to wildlife habitat.
