DONATE TO HELP RESCUE TELLICO!
SCHOOL BUS – GONE!
LOWER/UPPER 2 – GONE!
SLICK ROCK – GONE!
If you wheel or ride the Upper Tellico OHV Area, these names are very familiar to you. If you haven’t had the pleasure to experience Tellico these names are synonymous with Sledghammer, Rubicon, Hole-in the-rock, Cinder Hills, Poison Spider Mesa, Achy-Breaky, Slaughterhouse Gulch. More importantly, you need to know that if the Forest Service and extremist groups have their way; these Tellico trails will no longer exist.
The Forest Service instituted temporary closures on these trails at the end of last year. The closures were originally demanded in a notice of intent to sue from the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) and Trout Unlimited. The closures came with a promise to address the issues in planning, but instead of working to resolve the issues, the Forest Service has now proposed complete removal of these trails from the area—cutting the heart right out of the OHV experience of Tellico. It’s like someone removing the transfer case shifter and asking you to put it in 4WD.
With unprecedented unity, Southern Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA), United Four Wheel Associations (UFWDA), and the Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC) have teamed up to stop this travesty. Together, we have taken legal action and we need your financial support. With an estimated need of $100,000, Rescue Tellico has been formed to fund this effort.
Please join us in the fight by sending a generous donation to the Rescue Tellico Fund.
Each year, thousands of enthusiasts enjoy the trails in the Upper Tellico OHV Area. They come because the 39 miles that make up the Tellico OHV experience are among the few premier Off Highway Vehicle trails left east of the Mississippi river. The trails they are erasing are literally the heart of that experience—they are the reason people come. Without them there is no Tellico. If the FS and these special interest groups get their way, you won’t even need four-wheel drive on what is left in Tellico for trails. Your mom’s Oldsmobile would do fine.
Since the formation of Southern in 1987, thousands of volunteer hours representing hundreds of thousands of dollars have been invested in trail maintenance at Tellico to keep the area open. We cannot let it go by the wayside. Win or lose, we must draw the line in the sand because this goes deeper than just Tellico. This is about holding their feet to the fire on making sound management decisions to manage FOR OHV recreation… not FROM OHV recreation. What premier area is next on the chopping block?
Now is the time to stand up for what is right and help us in the fight to keep Tellico open by donating to this effort. Your donation will be earmarked and go directly to the legal efforts to keep Tellico open. Through the web site and other communication methods we will work to keep everyone informed as to the progress of the environmental analysis and other appropriate information.
Complete information concerning these proposed trail closures and modifications is on the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association web site at www.sfwda.org
