Barnwell on Youtube & Other Pictures

In case you have not been to Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area in Gilmer, Texas, be sure to check out Waggy on Dewoody at Barnwell Mountain on Youtube.

It will be a totally different experience from Oak Ridge Estate and the Wheel-in Virginia. First, the trail system is set up on a diamond trail rating system that is clearly marked at the beginning of each trail head. The trail systems are marked from 1 diamond - 5 diamond. 4 and 5 diamond are not open to stock vehicles and some of the three diamonds are not open to a stock vehicle. For those of you looking for a challenge you will find it at BMRA at the Texas Wheel-in!

Barnwell is a great place to wheel.  You have anything from mild to exteme and for many of the extreme obstacles, there's easy access for spectators.  (so for those of us who don't want to do them, we can easily watch those that are!) 

November will be a great time to visit the park.  Cool enough for camping... and hopefully dry as well.  There are several different camping areas so if you are coming with a group, you could all camp together.  There are also showers / restrooms on site as well.  For anyone that would be bringing something that requires electricity, there are those accomodations too.  And for those that want a hotel, town is just a short 5 - 8 minutes away. 

Overall, a great place to wheel.  My husband and I are there regulalry with either his rig (more extreme) or my rig (more accomodating for passengers and/or heating & cooling).   

We look forward to attending and seeing a ton of new visitors to Barnwell and the Gilmer, TX area!

Here are some more pictures... generally a little older then the ones Mike posted but they should give you some idea of the varied terrain and such:

There are plenty of scenic, casual trails and dirt ravines to play in...


All the trails / sections and some obstacles are marked generally like this... they use a 1 - 4+ diamond rating system (kind of like a ski area)


or this... for changes or notations on a trail...



Now that you have seen the sign above for "Houston Creek Trail" here is an older picture of the exit to Houston Creek - and the last time I was there is was gnarlier then this... (and those are 38's on the jeep in the picture to give you some perspective).


There is always something to look at as far as scenery goes...


Or just driving thru the trees on some of the tighter trails - almost feels like you are in another world...


And the sunsets can be incredible over the trees...

There are plenty of easier trails too...


Some you just need to pick the right line...


And really check out your flex...


And other have the right name - not too hard not too easy - "Fun Country"...


Or "Jeepy Hollow"


A little mud can generally be found (unless it is really dry)...


And there are more rocky trails like "Saturday Night Live"...

Mike talked a little about the rock garden.. don't know that these do it justice as it is quite long and close to wide enough for two rigs (at least it used to be - it may have changed since these photos)

These first two should give you an idea of length - standing in the middle and looking toward the west... (see the cones?)

"Spider Ravine" in the late fall...


A good example of some of the steep hill climbs - this one is on "Sidewinder"


"Wile E. Coyote" which can always be a fun one... (it was closed at one time but I think it is reopened now)

Looks like fun!! I believe even full size truck could fit down most of the trails?

Many of the trails are reasonably full size even hummer friendly (size wise), however there are a number that are too tight for full size vehicles.  There are trails all over the 1800 acres from scenic drives to tight tree lined forest.
