There's been a suggestion that UFWDA could do more to recognize the loyalty of many associations (organizations) and individuals. The concept of recognizing what might be termed as 'Charter members' and how to define the process is worth discussing.

I like this idea, and with a little work, I think we can compile this list.
We can then list the charter members on the members page, or home page.

UFWDA would not be here, if it were not for the original charter members.

Thanks for posting this Peter.

I believe you'll find the Montana 4x4 Association there from the beginning.

Our organizing President was the late Harold Brown.

Tom

Thanks for the info, and I have started a thread and word document to help with this.

I think Luana has one very valuable piece of of documentation. She n fact read it to the group a few years back. Does UFWDA have any stash of old minutes/newsletters/accounts?
I'm still trying to get some response out of my group.

Yes, Jim, I know I had it at the meeting in Montana and I have it somewhere and am looking for it.  It got lost in the abyss of previous meetings and haven't located it yet!!  I also have lots of old newsletters, but haven't had a chance to look through them for more info.  The hunt will be on more seriously after this weekend.  I also gave the person who was going to open a 4wd museum in Utah all sorts of United history at United's 25th Anniversary meeting if anyone knows where that stuff got off to.

That wat we have a electronic file of the old info.

Thanks for looking Luana.

That would be Kendra Cook if I'm not mistaken. Anyone have a line on her whereabouts?

I believe we (Thanks to Mark Burns, Past President of GLFWDA) have discovered the Holy Grail of UFWDA historical documents. Please do with it as you see fit. It's a great read on the 4WD climate of the time, the founders of the Assn, and the common issues we all share both then and now. Aside from seeing Richard Nixon as our President, you'd think you were reading a recent copy of our Associations newsletters.
Interesting reference to a National Four Wheel Drive Assn. and not wanting to step on their toes. Don't have any idea if this group survived or subsequently joined up with UFWDA. Will see what I can do about investigating this one further.

Very nice find, and good reading.

Thanks

x2!

I find it amazing how many Associations were formed for racing purposes.
Couldn't agreee more that (other than Nixon, lol) it sounds like it could have been printed last week!

I finally found the paperwork I was looking for in regard to the meeting in Golden, Colorado where by-laws, the official name and the official officers were established for United!  I got fooled because I had attached to the top of it an e-mail I had sent out in 2006 and never looked under it--I wonder how many times I've done that!  Justification--back in the 70's there was no e-mail!!!!  Ummm...must have been the stone age!! I have also many other items such as copies of the presentations at the meeting in Golden, the first board meeting in October, 1977, first by-laws etc.  I know at one time Todd Ockert was going to scan this type of thing, but wondering if someone is doing that type of thing now?  Let me know, and I'll make copies and send to you.

A plaque (I believe Carla may currently have) showing the first officers of United states the following:
                United 4 Wheel Drive Associations
                                    organized
                    July 30, 1977  Golden, Colorado

President                    Daryl Carper                Pacific Northwest
1st Vice President       Tucker Cope                East Coast
2nd Vice president        Kim Elliott                    British Columbia
Secretary/Treasurer      Jennie Swanson            Great Lakes
Delegate at large 1st    Smoky Hamilton            PNW
Delegate at large 2nd    Harold Brown                Montana
Past president/elect        Art Sealey                  California
Charter advisor                Jack Edwards              California

I also have been attempting to put together a listing of who attended the meeting in Golden.  The listing so far is as follows;

Harold Brown--Montana
Daryl Carper--PNW
Smokey Hamilton--PNW
Dan Hern--PNW
Jenny Swanson--Colorado
Art Sealey--California
Jack Edwards--California
Tucker Cope--East Coast
Bob Evans--East Coast
Claude Conn-Michigan
Harry Wolf--Michigan
Kim Elliott--British Columbia
Louie Larson--Midwest
Luana Schneider--Midwest
Rod Schneider--Midwest
George Schade--Arizona & attorney
George Wagonblast--PNW
Chic Chichester--Colorado
Toni Lenz--? An organization in California
Jack Dunwell--? organization
George Cheek--Guest Speaker

I know there are several more and I do not know if anyone might recall others that were at that meeting or if someone might have the actual sign in sheet?
