Danny and Lori McMellon built a little patio where they set a bench, down a short way from their house, overlooking Steep Hollow Canyon near Rollins Lake. Pines rise above the gravely creekbed below.
Nearby is an oak where they built a treehouse for their grandchildren, and a play area has a geodesic climbing structure set farther back.
It's a lovely spot.
Until the weekends, when partiers show up on their quads or in four-wheel-drive pickup trucks or maybe on dirt bikes, climbing along the creek.
And until the bullets start flying.
