Motorized uses on the Shoshone Forest must be considered as part of a new forest management plan, officials said Tuesday.

Clarifying their position in the face of recent criticism, the county commissioners said they want only to open the door to consideration for expanded off-highway vehicle use.

After the commission recently decided to support efforts by the Northwest Wyoming Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance, some apparently saw that as a full endorsement of more trails being opened, commission chairman Tim French said.

"We just want OHV users to have the opportunity to be included in the process," he said. "Actually opening any new trails would be an involved process that would include public comment."

The commission met Tuesday with Wapiti District Ranger Terry Root, OHV alliance president Dana Sander and other interested parties.
