Counties do not have the authority to register off road vehicles for use on beaches

Over the years, residents and visitors of Bolivar peninsula have freely driven off-highway vehicles (OHVís) on the beach. However, last summer, the number of tickets issued greatly increased due to the enforcement of a law which some felt did not permit OHVís on public beaches. This was brought to the attention of the state and county. After meetings and discussions between Representative Craig Eiland (D-Galveston), the General Land Office, the Galveston County Judge, the Sheriff, and the District Attorney, an Attorney Generalís (AG) opinion was requested to clarify the conflicting interpretation of the law.
