A proposal by the Siuslaw National Forest for designating off-highway vehicle trails last Friday has met mixed reviews.

While some users of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area are concerned about too many closures, others think it could have been much worse.

Rich Burkholder, of Spinreel Dune Buggy and ATV Rental, said he thinks the forest service cared about local businesses when discussing possible closures.

'I've talked to Sharon Stewart," he said of the dispersed recreation supervisor for the national forest. 'They're not pushing too much down here, I know that.

'She has been very open, talking to me as a business."

The national forest proposed 0.5 miles of additional routes be designated in the south riding area from Tenmile Creek south to Horsfall Road and 37 acres be reallocated to open riding. Four miles of user-developed routes would be open to OHV use, and 23 miles of user-developed routes would be closed and obliterated, or allowed to revert naturally.

Public comment

A 45-day comment period through Dec. 10 follows the Friday release of the draft environmental impact statement from the Siuslaw National Forest.

The proposal comes after three years of public working group meetings and soliciting comments from OHV users, other recreationalists, environmental experts and business owners. Designating OHV routes was part of a 1994 management plan.

The forest service published five different alternatives, and the proposal is alternative No. 2, with the preferred alternative being No. 4. The details and maps can be found online at www.fs.fed.us/nepa/fs-usda-pop.php/?project=34220.
