ANNOUNCEMENT
NATIONAL RECREATION FORUM

The American Recreation Coalition and the National Forest Foundation will convene a national Recreation Forum in Washington, D.C., on April 30, 2007, designed to provide national organizations opportunities to:
∑ Review recommendations from five regional forums conducted across the nation in March 2007;
∑ identify unmet needs and challenges facing recreation on public lands;
∑ provide examples of successful and innovative efforts to provide the nation with outstanding outdoor recreation experiences on public lands, and especially national forests; and
∑ express ideas and offer suggestions for enhancing the ability of public lands to
meet the recreation needs of and the resulting benefits to the American public.

While the National Forest Foundation and the American Recreation Coalition act as the conveners of the regional and national Forums, a broad array of government and outdoor recreation organizations, including the USDA Forest Service, has helped plan for and conduct each Forum.  Five Regional Forum task forces played central roles in the regional meetings, and representatives of the regional task forces plus national representatives shaped the national Forum.

The National Forum will involve invited participants in the Regional Forums and representatives of national organizations and agencies.  Limited opportunity will be available for general public involvement at the national forum.  The national Forum will begin with three topical sessions on (1) access, (2) volunteers and partnerships and (3) travel, tourism and public lands.  These sessions will meet from 10:00 am to noon.  At 1:00 pm, the national Recreation Forum will convene in the auditorium of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (1200 New York Avenue, NW).  The session will conclude at 5:00 PM and will be followed with a reception for participants and guests.

The national Recreation Forum will feature reports on each of the regional Forums as well as reports from the topical sessions.  A report on the national Recreation Forum will be prepared by the National Forest Foundation and will be released on May 22, 2007, in Washington in conjunction with Last Child in the Woods: A Warning and a Response, a program to be held at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Additional information on the national Forum can be found at www.funoutdoors.com/, including information on registering for the session and/or requesting an opportunity to offer comments.

Yes.  I will be representing UFWDA at the recreation forum in Washington, D.C. on April 30, 2007.  In addition to attending topical sessions, I have been asked to speak on a panel regarding recreational access during the day-long event.  I will post more information as it becomes available.
