Has anyone here ever helped form a Friends of ?? association or corporation?
I have been approached to assist in setting one up for the Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA), here in the Central Valley of California.  The CCMA is managed by the BLM from the Hollister office.  Rick Cooper is the District manager there, and a nice guy, and wants to work with the groups the recreate in the area to make sure it is managed in a way that benefits them.

So, if anyone has suggestions on the proper steps, and how to do this correctly, I would appreciate them.

The CCMA was part of a legal battle not that long ago with the Anti-Access folks when they wanted it closed down because of the Asbestos in the area.

Thanks

Hi Todd.  We can help.  There are several routes to get the Friends of CCMA.  If there is an existing entity in the area already like a club, then you can form the "friends of" as a committee of the club.  If there isn't a club or organization in the area then the "friends of" should chose a business organization entity that protects is officers from financial and tort liability.

But first things first.  Think about the following.

Will the Friends have members?
Will the members pay any money, like dues?
What type of activities will the Friends be engaged in?  Lobbying, meetings with agency personnel, clean-ups, etc.?
How will the Friends communicate - in person at meetings, via the internet or e-mail?

If you can start to picture the organization oin your mind it will help direct us to the proper process for creating the Friends organization.

If you'd like to take this discussion off-line, to retain attorney-client priveleges or to just get your direction started before becoming too public please e-mail directly at attorney@ufwda.org

We do have some infomration available at: http://www.ufwda.org/adopt-a-road.htm

The information deals with the Adot-a-Road program and is good information to keep in mind with a "Friends of" group in order to help focus your efforts.

One additional benefit UFWDA can offer is to establish a forum section for the "Friends of" group.  We can set up a private or public forum as necessary.

Carla & John

Thanks for the info.  Carla, I will send you an email from home, and include Steve, the other guy that we are starting this ball rolling.
It is something that we think is needed for the CCMA.

If you remember, there was a lawsuit over the area a couple of years ago, that we as users won.
Blue Ribbon was the lead on that litigation.  I am not sure if United was involved at all.

Steve and I were both on the Clear Creek work day on March 31st with the BLM.  We cleared a couple of trails, and pulled up about 300 feed of fence.  From that work to now, we have talked, and think that a Friends group would help out with the management of Clear Creek.

Thanks
