Attention Oregon and Northern California recreationists!
The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is formulating a new travel plan that will limit ALL vehicle use to designated roads, trails and areas. The Forest Service (FS) will be hosting a series of four open houses in June on the Travel Management Rule planning process.
As you know, the FS published a new rule requiring the agency to formally designate a system of roads, trails and areas where motorized vehicle use would be allowed. Forest Service regulation and other laws require the agency to conduct a planning process in collaboration with the public to help design the designated system.
The open houses will be the first step in the local planning process. During the meetings, the public will have the opportunity to visit with Forest Service staff, ask questions and learn about the timeline for implementation. These open houses are intended to provide informal interaction opportunities.
In 2007, the Forest will use travel analysis to identify proposals for change. The objectives of Travel Analysis will be to gather information, input, opinions and suggestions that can ultimately be used to develop a Proposed Action. By November 2007, managers plan to release a Proposed Action to start the National Environmental Policy Act analysis process.
The agency plans to produce Motor Vehicle Use Maps by July 2009 that display designated roads, trails and areas for motorized use, identified vehicle types and season of use on National Forest lands. These maps designate roads, trails or areas on the map as open to the public for motorized use.
The following is a schedule of dates, times and locations for the remaining open house:
