NZ Conservation Management Strategies

The New Zealand Department of Conservation, who administer over 1/3 of NZ land through 15 regional conservancy areas, are in the process of reviewing the statutory Conservation Management Strategy (CMS) documents for each region. These CMS's have a life of 10 years supposedly but already several existing ones have been unilaterally extended by several years.

If activities are not described as being allowed within a conservancy by its CMS then it will not be permitted.

It is essential that four wheel drive activity is included in every CMS as an option.

There is usually a period of general surveying of opinion and then the document draft is prepared for formal comment.
