If your idea of a fun weekend is four-wheeling in the Truckhaven Hills of southern California, browsing through 70 off-road vehicle vendor displays, and attending a raffle offering great prizes, then you should register for the 2007 Tierra del Sol Desert Safari. This year’s event will be our 45th and club members are working hard to make it the best ever.
The Desert Safari will be held on March 2-4, 2007 west of Highway 86 near Salton City, CA. There is plenty of room for RVs and tents,  Fuel and groceries are available at nearby Desert Shores and Salton City. Food vendors will be on site. The event will kick off at noon on Friday, March 2, with the opening of vehicle safety inspections, registration, T-shirt sales and vendor displays.
The Saturday Run departs at 8 a.m. and will cover about 17 miles of marked trails through dry mud hills, sandy washes, and rocky canyons. The highlight of Saturday evening will be the Safari Raffle. The 2006 Raffle topped $70,000 in value, so be back at Safari Headquarters by 7 p.m.

The West Shores Senior’s Club will be serving breakfast starting at 6 a.m. Sunday morning. This is the Senior’s largest fundraiser of the year, so be sure to support them and get a great breakfast.

The Rough Run leaves Sunday at 9 a.m. and features the best four-wheeling of the event. Vehicle requirements for all runs include a roll bar or hard-top, seat belts, functional emergency brake, mufflers, fire extinguisher, and a tow strap or winch. Street licensed vehicles only on all runs please.

Registration and T-shirt order forms may be downloaded at or requested by mail at Tierra del Sol Desert Safari, PO Box 81304, San Diego, CA 92138. Registrations postmarked by February 17 cost $45.  On site cost is $60.  Included are a dash plaque, bumper sticker, and one ticket for the prize drawing. Please pre-order your T-shirts as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as we sell out early.
The Tierra del Sol 4X4 Club of San Diego is best known in the off-road vehicle community for two things: its annual Desert Safari and large contributions to organizations fighting land closures. These two things go hand and hand. The Desert Safari is our only fundraiser. Your participation as a registered guest allows our club to make these donations. Come join Tierra del Sol at the 45th Annual Desert Safari and help us keep our public lands open.

Due to legal issues (Center for Biological Diversity is attempting to shut down recreation events at Truckhaven), the TDS Desert Safari 45 location has been changed.

Desert Safarii 45 will be held in the Ocotillo Wells SVRA. As a club, we opted to continue with Safari in a new location in order to avoid the legal entrapment that caught CORVA.

Note my quote in teh San Diego U-T:

“We are in this for long run, and we are willing to do what we can to support the continued existence of off-road recreation in that area,” said John Stewart, a consultant who works with off-road groups on resource issues. “If that means we have to wait until the state does . . . the environmental documentation, then fine.”

We already have more vendors that last year. We expect more people.

This will be an opprotunity to support 4 wheeling. We will be collecing donations fo rthe coming legal battles to keep Truckhaven open.

CAMPSITE: NOTE: New Location!! Located on Main Street and Hwy 78 in Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.
There’s lots of room and easy access for campers, motorhomes, and trailers. Please observe the signs. Bring your own firewood and drinking water. Additional supplies are available nearby in Ocotillo Wells. Coin-operated showers are available near the SVRA Ranger Station.

FRIDAY: Registration STARTS at NOON, Closes at 10 pm. Safety Check and Registration location is at TDS Safari Site.

SATURDAY: Registration reopens at 6:30 am. Run will leave from campsite, promptly at 8 am for a trip in Sandy Washes,
Rocky Canyons and Scenic Ridges of the best 4-Wheelin’ in Ocotillo Wells. Easier routes are marked “Green” to by-pass some of the harder/steeper trails. Radio Check Points throughout the run are on Official Use Only CB Channel 14 (Please!).

SUNDAY: Trips start at 9 am. The Sunday R ough Ru n will provide some of the best 4-wheelin’ of the weekend. The trail will not be marked. It will be a follow the leader run, so be sure to watch out for the vehicle behind you.
